Knitting an Art or a Craft?

There has been a lot of discussion about knitting or crocheting as art or a craft.  You may find the discussion I found in Kcknits as a good insight.

Here is my take on the subject.  When I create a piece based on a pattern and follow that pattern then it is a craft.  However it is also a learning experience and something that is added to a repertoire much the same as an artist learning a brush stroke or how to draw a vase or body.

When I create a piece without a pattern with a set concept, emotion or sensation I want to elicit then it is art.  I have brought together all my learned knowledge and skill to create a piece that is unique.  It is created with an emotional concept in mind and the stitches I use  create that feeling.
